&lt;p&gt;I don&#039;t know Ruby but can guess what the above code is doing - maybe it is more my ignorance of Rails or RDBMS&#039;s that is confusing me?&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Is it because the 1st one uses ActiveRecord and the 2nd one doesn&#039;t?&lt;/p&gt;
